The Revelstoke Women's Shelter benefit golf tournament, now in its third year as an adjunct event of the Kokanee Glacier Challenge, is fast becoming a major draw in its own right.

“It's not so much about making money for the shelter as it is about raising awareness of the issue,” organizer and Women’s Shelter Society President Denny Kaulback said in an interview.

“It was so successful that we decided to hold another one this year.”

He said this year’s golf tournament already has 68 registrants, many of whom were also in town to play ball in the mixed slowpitch tourney.

“There are so many teams here this year (for the ball tournament) that we expect to get more than that,” Kaulback said.

“We’re lucky to have this and we really appreciate the support we’ve received from the Kokanee Glacier Challenge organizers and the Revelstoke Golf Club which has given us a real break on the green fees.”

Last year’s golf tournament raised $1100 for the Women’s Shelter and helped raise public awareness about the nature of domestic violence in Revelstoke.

But it was a fun event for all of the duffers who paid $50 to enter and the 12 volunteers from the society who ran it.

Kaulback said there are men’s and women’s divisions and prizes of all kinds have been provided for the low gross score, low net, closest to the pin, and long drive. What’s more, some prizes fall in the “just for fun” category.

That includes things like the worst drive and, perhaps even a repeat of last year’s popular chipping drum that gave contestants three chances to chip a golf ball into a 45-gallon drum.
As with everything that happens during the Kokanee Glacier Challenge the golf tournament is an opportunity for people to enjoy an excellent time while supporting an important local cause.

That’s a combination that is hard to beat.
